A KIND OF BRIEF HISTORY OF THE GOLDEN LAURELS

We started as the Laurelheads, and remained the laurelheads for exactly 51 weeks and one day. Well, for the first week we were... what were we? I don't know. A group, based on rules such as... I don't even remember. We named each day after a Greek God, and invented a new language that I still have memorized. Comes in useful when you don't want people reading your writing.

We started because we were bored, on June 23rd, 2007. My parents had kicked Chloé and I off the computer, and we were- the horror!- kicked outside.

So we did what any sane middle-schoolers would do, right? We decided to try and irritate someone. Kind of.

The college-aged neighbors on the otherside of the laurels were having a party. A loud party. Something to do with throwing beanie bags at a wooden box, and screaming and moaning as they hit or missed. Anyway. We tried to disguise ourselves as bushes (though the Shakespear obsession lies with Hailey, not present at that time.) but it didn't work well. We settled on a hat. (see picture on the right.)

My birthday party was the next week, and Me, Perri, Katie and Chloé were all going camping. We made up more new rules then; I don't remember what they all were.We- that is, Chloé and myself,- went bushwacking. The other two lacked the proper bushwacking spirit, and stopped after about ten meters.

I think the rules lasted about twenty four hours after we all went home.Perri decreed that we needed a purpose, because there wasn't anything we could do as a group...

First, we decided on a monthly charity to donate to, recruiting Hailey a couple days later, on 7/7/07. (Lucky number.)

Then a yearly charity.

Now, we're stuck on one.

Katie gets credit for the bake sale idea. We set up on the Burke Gilman trail, and have been doing monthy sales from March to November. Look for us on Saturdays, where the Burke crosses 40th NE, next to the Metropolitan Market.

In April 2008, Justina Chen Headly went on a book tour, advertizing a grant from Youth Venture. We applied, and after some incidents involving compatibility issues with two versions of powerpoint, and needing to change speakers at the last minute due to unpredicted events, we got it.

On our camping trip to Mount Rainier in June '08(a fun event involving jumping into the Ohanapecosh river, mini doughnuts, and year old, fermented peaches,) we changed the name to Golden laurels.

In September, we held a garage sale, collecting donations from neighbors. That raised about $500 profit.

Our most recent fundraiser has been the selling of TisBest gift cards, raising about $300.

And we are close(r) to starting bake sale season. Hope to see you then!
